Gua Sha Care & Safety

Gua sha is a traditional Chinese healing technique that involves using a smooth-edged tool to gently scrape the skin in order to promote circulation, relieve muscle tension, & improve overall well-being. To ensure a safe & effective experience while performing gua sha, it is important to follow proper care & safety guidelines. Here are some recommendations to keep in mind:

Cleanliness:
    • Before and after each use, thoroughly clean the gua sha tool with mild soap & warm water.
      • Avoid exposing the tool to harsh chemicals or prolonged sunlight.

        Skin Preparation:

          • Wash your hands & cleanse the area of the body where you will perform gua sha.
            • Apply a thin layer of oil to facilitate smoother gliding of the tool and reduce friction on the skin. We recommend castor oil.

              Pressure & Technique:

                • Apply gentle to moderate pressure while scraping the skin, avoiding excessive force to prevent discomfort or bruising.
                  • Use long, fluid strokes in one direction, typically moving from the center of the body towards the periphery or along the muscle fibers.
                    • Avoid scraping over bony areas, broken skin, or areas with cuts, bruises, rashes, or sunburn.

                      Duration & Frequency:

                        • Begin with shorter sessions, gradually increasing the duration as your body becomes accustomed to the technique.
                          • Aim for sessions lasting 5-15 minutes per area, & remember to take breaks between different body parts to avoid overstimulation.
                            • The frequency of gua sha sessions depends on individual needs & preferences, but it is generally recommended to start with 1-3 times per week.

                              Sensations & Reactions:

                                • It is normal to experience mild redness, warmth, or petechiae (small red dots) on the skin after gua sha. These are signs of improved blood circulation and should fade within a few days.
                                  • If you experience severe pain, excessive bruising, or any other adverse reactions, discontinue gua sha and consult a healthcare professional.

Remember, gua sha is a complementary therapy and should not replace professional medical advice or treatment. If you have any questions or concerns, it is always best to consult a qualified healthcare practitioner before incorporating gua sha into your wellness routine.
